Straight Outta Dumfuk is a passionate and personal remembrance of growing up in an Appalachian small town, population 258. Our parents and close relatives were from the Greatest Generation with the unspoken duty to raise and teach us so no matter what came, my brother and I could take care of ourselves and never have to depend on anyone or anything to survive. The virtues instilled, sometimes with physical beatings, were unashamed patriotism, independence, honesty, save your money, fairness, hard work, self-reliance, never quit. in short, the wisdom of The Greatest Generation. It is a deeply moving and funny memoir featuring colorful characters with nicknames like Blind Robin Borash, Bony Reed, Pepsi Malloy, Beanie Vowinkle, and Froggy Bish. White’s own dark comedy and Appalachian gallows humor are ever-present. The 114 anecdotes are blunt, politically incorrect, sometimes rude, often touching from a time when families gathered every evening to eat "supper", laugh together and sometimes mourn together.

Though JW has his own writing style, I am reminded of the late-great Jean Shepherd and his radio show characters that eventually fed the movie "A Christmas Story". These stories are from a time back when kids played outside and didn't sit for hours in front of TV sets or computers. All are bound by a common thread of folk wisdom represented by "bricks" of experience-driven knowledge. That's the real value of this book written in-between the lines: either you learn from others mistakes, or you learn the hard way; by taking your lumps. If you grew up around this time, in similar circumstances, this book will help you realize how lucky you were. If you grew up after this Golden Age, you're going to realize how much you missed out.I eagerly await volumes 2 and 3!

STRAIGHT OUTTA DUMFUK Raised by the Greatest Generation JOE WHITE 9781521172056 Books Reviews
A great read - so many near memories to my own families experiences. More like a collection of short stories so it is easy to pick back up at any point.
I was laughing my ass off from start to finish. It struck me later, I grew up in a similar place but different time, and did the same things as Joe. Makes me want to put my own stories out there. Kids don't have the same 'luxuries' as Joe had. Maybe kids do if you live in Shippenville. Good read. Thank you.
I'd give it 6 stars if I could. White's (aka R. Don Steele) books are always entertaining and informative. He has switched genres here to recount his early days in the backwaters of Pennsylvania. Packed with short tales guaranteed to bring a smile to your lips and amuse you. The reader is invited to step into a time machine and experience a world that has largely disappeared through the eyes of a keen observer of humans and their behaviors. Even though the names, places and props have changed, many of the stories will remind you of curious events and people in your own life. I am keenly looking forward to future volumes that cover other periods in the author's life. Well worth reading! My paper version arrived yesterday and I took it down to get John Harvard's opinion. He gave it 2 thumbs up!
A fun and funny look back at growing up in Appalachia - cars, guns, Elvis, girls and trying for that first kiss. Whether you lived it or just wish you had, a great take on being raised by America's Greatest Generation. Highly Recommended!
I just finished reading John Joe White’s book, “STRAIGHT OUTTA DUMFUK”, that I got on . I couldn’t put it down. To me it was like sitting down with Joe and talking about those “stupid” things we did growing up there. What made it especially interesting for me was I know most of the people referenced in the book. Even if you don’t know where Clarion is we all came from somewhere and I would bet you can personally identify with many of the “characters”.
Thank you Joe, I can’t wait until your next one. If you run short of stories I can provide many from my days on the River Hill.
What a book! So funny. So real. So raw. When so much of what we see on TV or read is "sanitized" for our protection, it's refreshing to read of lives tainted by a reality not often spoken/written about. I recommend this book to every hipster and bipster who wants to learn what life without excuses was like. I say was, but I hope it's still a reality somewhere. Reality is always so much more surprising and inspiring than what we can imagine. When the thin veneer of "wisdom" or "life lessons" is peeled away, and just how things actually went down remains, well...so does the reader's visceral reaction of laughter, shock, and some form of personal political correctness. We seem to want to make people better than they are, or deny them altogether. Straight Outta Dumfuk doesn't let us off the hook, or get away with our little conceits. Reality bites. As SOD claims The smart ones get it, the others never will.
I started to browse through this book and couldn't put it down. It stirred up many of my own memories of growing up in the 1950s and 60s. Today's kids ask, "How did you guys live life without cell phones, video games, and the Internet?" The answer is We really lived! And our parents didn't try to over-protect us from germs, hobgoblins and ourselves. Why did so many "Baby Boomers" like Joe White grow up to be resourceful and self-reliant? It's because they were raised by the "Greatest Generation" who followed a no-nonsense method of parenting. If you want to learn their parenting secrets (while howling with laughter), I heartily recommend "Straight Outta Dumfuk!"
